The Deer Hunter

  • 30 May 2016
  • The 1979 Oscar winner for Best Picture is epic and, surprisingly, understated.

Birdman

  • 28 Feb 2016
  • The six-year-old in me roots for Michael Keaton; a VHS copy of Tim Burton's Batman is still at my parents' house. I felt more obligated than excited to watch Birdman, but it won me over within five or so minutes.

American Sniper

  • 2 Jul 2015
  • This biopic does enough to stand out in a genre that's getting tired. Like the non-fiction book, the movie follows Chris Kyle while he thrives as a Navy SEAL at war and then as he struggles as a family man at home.

Dallas Buyers Club

  • 25 Jun 2015
  • Some aspects are contrived and predictable, but overall this 2014 nominee for Best Picture lives up to the hype because of its unusual plot and charismatic leads.
