Draft Combine

Game 1

I had six points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals, but I had five turnovers and 23 percent shooting. My squad won by two points.

Game 2

I made a jumpshot and a layup, and I had several assists. I had a poor overall performance, but my squad won by five points in a rematch of my first game.

Game 3

I had a fair performance and my new squad lost by a point against another new squad. I completed all of my individual objectives though and improved upon my previous games.

Game 4

I hit a couple of jumpshots and set up teammates a few times, but my squad lost by 11 points in a rematch of my second game. I had my worst performance of the draft combine.

Game 5

I had a great individual performance, my best yet, and my third squad of the combine beat my third opposing squad by 13 points.

Game 6

I had a disappointing performance, and my squad lost by eight points to the squad that we had previously beat. My game was not as bad as my previous ones, though.

Summary

I alternated between having good and bad performances; I only played relatively well in my odd-numbered games. I was unused to pacing my physical exertion, so I was often too exhausted to play respectable defense and make otherwise routine baskets. I had some embarassing shots and turnovers, too. I marginally improved my stock in the NBA draft.

Summer Circuit

Minnesota Timberwolves

vs Portland Trailblazers

I was a sub and had my worst-ever performance. I had to play the shooting guard position and my matchup scored from all over the floor. I made a breakaway dunk, a contested runner, a fast-break layup, and a low-post jumpshot. I had a few assists as well, but my team lost by several points.

vs Phoenix Suns

I was a starter. I had several assists, but I also had a couple of turnovers. I missed a breakaway layup, too. I was subbed into the game as a shooting guard and later as a small forward. I think that I only made one basket, but my team won by 15 points.

vs San Antonio Spurs

I was a sub again and I only scored 2 points with a layup under the basket. I had several assists, though. I had to play the small forward position early in the game and my matchup schooled me in the low post. I had a much better overall performance, however, and my team won by several points.

vs Utah Jazz

I started alongside a few players on the Timberwolves' NBA roster. I made a few fast-break scores, a jumpshot from the elbow of the key, and a dribble layup. My poor free-throw shooting was obvious throughout the game, especially near the end, but my team won by a point.

vs Houston Rockets

I was the starting point guard again, but my performance was even worse than my first game. I had a pair of fast-break scores, including a dunk, and a pair of dribble layups. I missed all of my free throws again and my shot selection was disastrous. My team lost by five points.

vs Golden State Warriors

I had my best performance. I hit a few jumpshots and got easy scores with my dribble and with my off-ball movement. I played better on-ball defense and had several assists, but I still had a couple of embarassing turnovers. I outplayed the Warriors' Stephen Curry, and my team won by three points.

Summary

My scoring, passing, and ball control slightly improved. I forced a lot of shots, but my field-goal percentage was much higher than during the Combine. I should have looked to create better scoring chances with my dribble. I had less rebounds and steals among the higher level of talent. My performance against Golden State got me my only invite to training camp.

Training Camp

Golden State Warriors

vs Stephen Curry

I played well against Stephen Curry in the summer circuit, but he scored 58 points in 48 minutes during this rematch. I had 20 assists, but I also had 8 turnovers. I shot poorly once again and my squad lost by 28 points.

vs CJ Watson

I had 22 assists, but this time I only had 3 turnovers. I made a couple of mid-range jumpshots and a few in-traffic layups. However, my field-goal percentage for training camp went below 30 percent because of my poor shot-selection in this game. Still, my squad won by nine points.

vs Craig (Speedy) Claxton

I had my best performance as an aspiring NBA player. I still made some foolish decisions, but I maintained my high assist-to-turnover ratio while scoring 28 points and dramatically increasing my overall field-goal percentage. My squad won by 19 points.

vs CJ Watson

I was turnover prone; I had my passes intercepted and my handle disrupted throughout the game. I badly lost my position battle against Watson because he scored a lot of points in several ways while I struggled to get into a scoring rhythm. My squad lost by 29 points.

Overall

Like in the Draft Combine and the Summer Circuit, I was inconsistent throughout Training Camp. I had a pair of good performances that were sandwiched between a pair of bad ones. I was confident that I could repeat my success against Watson, but I lost in the worst possible ways. I was cut from the team before the fifth and final training-camp game.

D-League

Fort Wayne Mad Ants

vs Erie BayHawks

I was a sub, but I nearly had a double-double with 14 points and 9 assists. I made a couple of jumpshots and a few layups. I passed to teammates who were cutting to the basket or were already under it. I also assisted with three-pointers in transition. I forget whether we won or lost.

vs Erie BayHawks

I had a dismal performance. I had 10 assists, but I only scored 4 points. I made a long jumpshot and a flukey layup that a defender swatted against the backboard. My shooting percentage was below 30 percent because I took a lot of low-percentage shots. We lost by 26 points.

at Iowa Energy

I bounced back with 12 points, 9 assists, and 3 rebounds. Besides a breakaway layup, I hit several tough shots. I made a few runners in the lane plus a fadeaway low-post jumpshot and a quick jump-hook. I had some foolish passes, but we won by 8 points.

at Iowa Energy

I had my worst performance as a D-League player. I had 10 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds. I made a few layups, a low-post floater, and a corner jumpshot. I took and missed a lot of low-percentage shots, though. We barely won by two points with a buzzer-beating, three-point shot.

vs Sioux Falls Skyforce

I had a career-high 15 points to go with 4 assists and 6 rebounds. I had several teammate-assisted and self-created layups, and I also hit a fadeway jumpshot from the right baseline. I drew a few shooting fouls and I finally made a free throw. We lost by 19 points, though.

vs Sioux Falls Skyforce

I had 23 points and 9 rebounds, both career-highs, and 8 assists. I made a couple of contested floaters, a few mid-range jumpshots, and even a pair of three-pointers. I still had lapses in concentration at both ends of the court, but we won by six points.

Summary

My performances were inconsistent from game to game and I never earned a start. Before my final game, I was sure that I would be stuck in the D-League. Even the 2K Insider, my career guide, seemed noncommital about my possible future in the NBA. I almost lost hope until my near triple-double gave me the chance that I needed.

Rookie Season

Oklahoma City Thunder

at Denver Nuggets, 14 Dec

My first NBA game was exciting; I played in front of a packed house for the first time. I finished the game with only 6 points, all from layups, but I had 14 assists and 7 rebounds. We lost by 10 points, but I had a good performance.

vs Dallas Mavericks, 16 Dec

I had a great performance in my home debut. I got my first-ever triple double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists. I hit a pair of open jumpshots and used dribble moves to create easy scores. We barely won by three points.

at Washington Wizards, 29 Dec

I earned my first NBA start amid a two-week losing streak. I had a double-double with 18 points and 15 assists. I also had 5 rebounds. I was outplayed by Gilbert Arenas though, and he was named Player of the Game. We lost by 14 points, so my start did not really help things.

at Chicago Bulls, 4 Jan

My first game in the House that Jordan Built was memorable. We had the lead until midway through the fourth quarter, but defensive lapses and turnovers led to our seven-point loss. I finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists against Derek Rose, a fellow emerging superstar guard.

vs Atlanta Hawks, 2 Feb

For the first time in my career, I was named as the Player of the Game. I had 18 points and 17 assists plus three rebounds and a steal in our win.

at San Antonio Spurs, 24 Feb

The last two minutes were close, but the Spurs eventually won by seven points and ended our three-game winning streak. I had 12 points and 11 assists, but I also had four turnovers. I scored my 500th career point and earned my 25th double-double of the season with the same basket.

vs LA Lakers, 26 Mar

I missed an important free throw near the end of the game. Then I got caught on a screen during an inbounds play that let Kobe Bryant hit a long three-point shot to force overtime. I had to guard Kobe in the extra period and he hit several more tough shots. We lost by nine points.

at Boston Celtics, 31 Mar

We overcame a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit thanks to Russell Westbrook and me. Ray Allen missed a jumpshot over me in the final seconds, and then after we got the rebound, I hit a buzzer-beating jumpshot to avoid overtime. In other words, I won the game.

vs Phoenix Suns, 9 Apr

I played well against Steve Nash, a fellow Canadian point guard. In fact, I earned Player of the Game honours with 21 points and 16 assists. I even got two blocks, both against Leandro Barbosa. We won by four points.

at Golden State Warriors, 11 Apr

I scored 30 points for the first time. I also had 21 assists when I was subbed out halfway through the fourth quarter. I re-entered the game with less than a minute left, and our 16-point lead had been reduced to four. I missed a jumpshot in the final seconds and we lost by a point.

at Portland Trailblazers, 12 Apr

I played all 53 minutes in our exciting overtime victory. The game was back-and-forth and everyone seemed to shoot a high field-goald percentage. I had 16 points and 26 points and was the Player of the Game.

vs Memphis Grizzlies, 14 Apr

I scored my 1000th career point early in the game. I had 25 points and 23 assists and was named as the Player of the Game for my efforts. We easily won our final game of the season.

Summary

We finished with a league-worst 25 wins and had three different head coaches. However, a quarter of our wins were in the final month of the regular season while I emerged as a consistent scorer. I led the league in assists per game and was the final Player of the Week and final Player of the Month. I made the NBA's All-Rookie Second Team.

Sophomore Season

Orlando Magic

at New York Knicks, 28 Oct

I made my Magic debut in New York City, the Mecca of basketball. I enjoyed the rebounding prowess and scoring options of my new team. I was somewhat unused to my new teammates, but I had 31 points and 17 assists. I was the Player of the Game in our eight-point win.

vs New Jersey Nets, 2 Nov

New Jersey had a 15-point lead by the end of the first quarter and held it for the rest of the game. Brook Lopez altered and blocked my shots at the rim, and Devin Harris used his jumpshooting and speed to score 27 points against me. The Nets were highly rated and matched up well against us.

at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7 Nov

LeBron James scored 72 points against us. We trailed by five points for most of the third quarter until LeBron and his team built a double-digit lead; we eventually lost by 15 points. I had 22 points and 16 assists, but I lost my one-on-one battle against Mo Williams.

at Chicago Bulls, 11 Nov

We led by five points with less than two minutes left in the game, but the Bulls managed to tie the score. I missed two consecutive layups and my defensive lapse let Derek Rose score a layup that gave the lead to Chicago. He later hit important free throws that secured our three-point loss.

at Miami Heat, 16 Nov

We squandered a 19-point lead that we had to start the fourth quarter. I hit two clutch free thows to secure a three-point lead and then Wade missed a last-effort three-pointer. Dwight Howard had 48 points and 19 rebounds for us.

vs Oklahoma City Thunder, 19 Dec

We out-rebounded my former team by 20 or so rebounds and won by 34 points. I had 21 points and 20 assists and, despite my initial doubt, I was glad that I had left Oklahoma City for Orlando during the off-season.

vs Cleveland Cavaliers, 5 Jan

I scored 40 points for the first time in my career. I also had 11 assists. We limited LeBron James, who was averaging 39 points per game, to less than 20 points. I dominated my position battle against Mo Williams and we won by 23 points. I was the Player of the Game.

at Denver Nuggets, 1 Feb

We faced the team with the best record of the Western Conference. We won by 13 points in the arena where I played my first NBA game. I had 28 points and 14 assists as well as 4 rebounds and 5 steals. I was again honoured as Player of the Game.

vs Atlanta Hawks, 9 Feb

I had a career-high 64 points plus a game-high 15 assists to help my team win by 29 points. I had a lot of end-to-end dunks and layups, but I also made mid-range jumpshots and a few tough, circus shots.

vs Rookie Team, 13 Feb

This exhibition was close until Blake Griffin dominated the fourth quarter for us. We led by 11 points in the last minute, but my matchup narrowed it to five points. I had 33 points and 12 assists, but Griffin, who had 32 points and 12 rebounds, was the Player of the Game.

vs West All-Stars, 14 Feb

I was the top vote-getting point guard in the Eastern Conference, so I started the all-star game. I was subbed out with a few minutes left in the third quarter. I got to watch the rest of the game from the bench. My team lost by a point and Tony Parker was the game's MVP.

vs Los Angeles Lakers, 12 Mar

Our lead was three points as late as the final two minutes, but we pulled away from Kobe and his team to win by nine points. I had another 20-20 game with 28 points and 21 assists. Naturally, I was the Player of the Game.

vs Utah Jazz, 17 Mar

Utah had the best record in the Western Conference, but even Derron Williams of the Jazz was helpless in our 50-point win.

vs Atlanta Hawks, 26 Mar

Atlanta had surprisingly ended our 26-game winning streak two days earlier. I was eager to help avenge our loss in Atlanta. I had 22 points and 9 assists to be the Player of the Game in our 17-point win.

vs various, 9-14 Apr

With four games remaining, we were three wins away from besting the famous 72-10 regular-season record of the 1996 Chicago Bulls. We beat San Antonio, but then we lost close games to Chicago and New Jersey. We beat Cleveland in the final game to reach 72 wins.

vs Washington Wizards, 19-29 Apr

We won the first game in overtime, but we lost the next two games. I was frustrated with the play of our wing players in these losses. To avoid the monumental upset, I focused on setting up easy scores for Dwight Howard and playing tight defense against Gilbert Arenas. We won the next three games by double digits thanks to good performances by Dwight Howard.

vs Indiana Pacers, 4-12 May

We lost the first game because my matchup, the NBA Rookie of the Year, dribbled by me for a layup in the final seconds. I later had the chance to hit a buzzer-beater, but my shot was late and I missed it anyway. We easily won the next four games, however, thanks to the play of Dwight Howard and me.

vs Toronto Raptors, 20-30 May

We split the opening four games against Toronto. The Raptors' starting frontcourt had good jumpshooters and they exploited our weak defense on the wings. These games were tense because I believed that Toronto could build a runaway lead at any time; ever possession was important. Our wins in the fifth and sixth games were blowouts.

vs San Antonio Spurs, 6-12 June

Dwight Howard was the Player of the Game in our opening five-point win. I was the Player of the Game for the next three games while I led us to double-digit victories. Our sweep of the defending champions was anti-climactic compared to our other series, but it was no less satisfying.

Summary

Over the course of my sophomore season, I finally realized my potential as a superstar. I joined Orlando because the team was already a contender and its core players complemented my skills and style as a pass-first point guard. I started the season wondering if I could lead the Magic and ended as the MVP of both the regular season and the NBA finals.
